✹  More about "The Light of the Sun"

The Light of the Sun is the brainchild of vocalist and co-writer Luqman Frank and producer and co-writer Quincy B. Griffin.

Inspired by 1970s soul legends, such as Curtis Mayfield and Al Green, Luqman and Quincy set out to capture the era’s rich and textured soundscapes with ornate keys, rousing horns, soulful guitars and spirited percussion, while infusing it with elements of the hip hop and R&B they grew up with.

Brimming with tenderness and truth, Luqman’s multifaceted vocal performances shine and seduce across twelve tracks. He moves easily from the playful romance of “Never” and “All My Love;” to the rousing, gospel-inflected “Bring Your Love;” to the retro upper registers of “Baby Come Home” and “Leaving for Living”—a song written by Luqman’s mother (Linda Frank), who was herself a professional singer in the 1970s.

While soul remains at the core, the project is seasoned with other influences—as in the title track “The Light of the Sun,” featuring emcee Pep Love (Hieroglyphics); while songs such as “So Into U” and “I Wish” evoke the smooth R&B jams of the late ‘90s.

In the stand-out closing track, “Down On My Knees,” Luqman delivers a raw and unfiltered blues.

It’s a fitting end to an album that is at once an homage to a bygone era and a direct response to our challenging times: a reminder of the power of music to heal, uplift and empower, and that while we can’t always control the darkness, we can choose—if just for 60 minutes—to let the sunlight in.
